Looking to buy a remote control helicopter for yourself, or as a gift? Here's an explanation of five types of helo that should help you decide which kind is best for your flying style.

If you are thinking of what particular remote control helicopter to buy, then this article should help.

Here are the different types of remote control helicopter:

Gas remote control helicopter – If you are thinking of flying a helicopter that somehow close to flying a real helicopter, then the gas remote control helicopter is for you. Made with an engine and powered by gas, this helicopter is the most advanced remote control helicopter to buy. Gas remote control helicopter does not come cheap with engine and more complicated moving parts. Gas remote control helicopter is for advanced RC pilot.

Electric remote control helicopter – Early electric remote control helicopters released are expensive but later models are more affordable. This makes electric remote control helicopters more popular than any type of remote control helicopters on the market. It is easy to fly. It creates no noise and smell not like the gas helo. It is powered by a rechargeable battery. The electric remote control helicopter is suitable for beginners.

Mini remote control helicopter – Also powered by battery, this type of helicopter is similar to the electric RC helicopter. In fact, it is hard to define if the electric remote control helicopter falls in the category of a mini. But to be safe about it, you can say that it is mini if you can fly it in your living room without imposing danger to your furniture.

Mini remote control helicopter is fun to fly although controlling it in the air might be a little complicated at first. Once you get the hang of it, maneuvers and landings are easy. It is also far more affordable than the two types mentioned earlier.

Micro remote control helicopter – If you have seen a micro RC car, micro RC boat, and micro plane, then you should not be surprised if you see micro remote control helicopter. This tiny piece of aircraft can stretch up to 8 inches. But, you cannot consider it a toy. It has standard features similar to that of a standard remote control helicopter. It is so tiny that it look delicate but in truth materials used, such as titanium and carbon, are strong.

Toy remote control helicopter – If you want an affordable remote control helicopter, then this one is for you. Only remember that to fly this type of remote control helicopter requires a lot of practice.

Understanding Remote Control Helicopters

Author: Javed Khan

Remote control helicopters are magnificent toys, not just for kids but also for everyone who enjoy controlling flying objects.

It looks easy to fly these amazing toys but it takes time to master even the basic technique. Learning how to fly remote controlled helicopters is very challenging. It's just like when you first learned how to use a skateboard. When you see someone flying these helicopters, you usually think that it's so easy. Well the truth is, it requires a little patience and technique to fly these things. As soon as you master the basics, however, you will surely learn the other techniques quite easily.

There are different controls which you need to master in order to fly remote control helicopters.

First is the collective control, this is first and most basic thing you need to master in order to fly remote controlled helicopters. The collective controls the part where the helicopter takes off. This is done by simply increasing the pitch angle in the main rotor blades of the helicopter. While increasing the pitch angle on the helicopter's blades and increasing the power at the same time, the result is a load increase on the helicopter's engine. This load increase will keep the engine at a certain constant RPM, thus resulting for remote control helicopters to lift off.

The next thing you need to master is the cyclic control.

The cyclic control is the one responsible for the direction of helicopters. The cyclic functions by changing the angle of pitch of each rotor blade as it makes a single revolution. The cyclic control is usually the right one on your transmitter.

To use this control simply move the control towards the desired direction. For example, if you move the cyclic control forward then it means that the front blades of helicopters will go down and the back blades go up. Hence, the helicopter moves forward.

When you master the basics of cyclic control, you can combine them making a better flying experience.

Next thing to understand is the gyro.

The gyro detects yaw movements of remote controlled toy helicopters, and feeds that input to the tail rotor in order to dampen movements. When you move the left stick in any direction, it transmits control inputs to the tail rotor.

The gyro is very important because without it the helicopter would spin around wildly without any direction.

Just like most remote controlled toys, remote controlled helicopters need a five channel radio. Each of these radios are required for controlling the pitch, roll, and yaw. Another radio controls the throttle, and one is for the collective.

Lastly, you need to understand auto-rotation. It is the simple process of landing remote control helicopters when the engine is damaged and quits flying. When remote control helicopters descend, the wind that passes through the blades from below can cause the blades to spin up, building an inconstant speed. As the ground nears, you can apply collective to increase lift.

Shopping for an RC helicopter can undoubtedly be an intimidating task. In the most basic form, RC helicopters can be placed in one of two categories: Hobby-grade or toy-grade. Both forms of helicopters are marketed towards different crowds, but all have the same purpose. They are toys and meant to have fun with. This article will go over each type of helicopter and help you decide which type is best for you based on experience, cost, flying locations, and many other factors.

Toy-grade

Aren’t they all toys? What makes a “toy-grade” different from a “hobby-grade” helicopter?

Well, surprisingly, there are quite a few differences that you’ll most certainly want to be aware of before you invest in your first helicopter. To begin with, toy-grade helicopters tend to have a foam exterior. This is to make them more durable for entry-level flyers and children alike. Very few if any parts on these have parts that can be replaced or upgraded. Often times spare propellers will be included should the originals be damaged in a crash, though this is something worth looking into before you make a purchase. As for the electronics, what is included is what you’re stuck with. They will often come with multiple channels—or bands—radio systems so you can fly more than one at a time, but some cheaper models will not support this.

Toy-grade helicopters are not without their benefits. The foam exterior and simplicity is great for beginners to the hobby. Most toy-grade’s aren’t as powerful so it’s easier to remain in control of the machine at all times. Finally, one of the major selling points is their price. Toy-grade helicopters can be found at almost any toy or large retail store, and can be as inexpensive as $15.00 US!

In conclusion, toy-grade helicopters can be just as much fun as hobby-grade with a much lower price tag and more durable design. Fantastic as they are for beginners, they may be lacking for the power-hungy intermediate or advanced user who has been flying for a while. As a first helicopter, toy-grade is certainly the way to go.

Hobby-grade

If looking for a bit more performance out of your helicopter, hobby-grade may be the best option. Recommended for more advanced users and adults, hobby-grade copters are typically upgradable and have replicable parts. Unlike toy-grade, when parts break it’s easy to buy replacements and be back in action. They can even upgrade them if desired; faster motor, better radio/receiver, stronger parts.

All of these benefits typically come with a slightly larger price tag; though will be well worth it for more advanced flyers. Another important note to consider is the electronics inside. Hobby-grade copters often have digitally proportional speed controllers for precise control, gyroscopes for added balance, and upgradable batteries for more power.

Most toy-grade helicopters tend to be micro or mini, allowing safe indoor flight, but hobby-grade helicopters can be much larger. While there are also micro sized copters, the size options are truly endless.

While each type has its pros and cons, there is always a helicopter to suit everybody’s needs. It’s crucial to research before going ahead and investing. Read descriptions carefully, check out video demonstrations, and most importantly see what others have to say about the products first.

Still confused? Don’t worry. Once you get a helicopter the fun truly begins. Below is a quick guide to follow to see which time of helicopter would best suit your needs. This is just a recommendation but it should be pretty useful to help identify what type of user you are.

First you need to decide if you want to get an airplane, a boat, car, helicopter, motorcycle, or truck.

Since your looking at a model for all ages airplanes and helicopters are probably out as they take some learning, and are rated for older individuals.

I recommend that you start out with a car or truck. Later you can venture into another remote control area if you decide you want to.

NITRO RC models are a lot of fun. They do require more maintenance than electrics, and normally cost more.

Another remote control type you might find interesting is RC construction equipment. The front loaders, excavators, dump trucks, cranes, and forklifts are great for young and old alike. They offer an opportunity to build RC activity centers to operate all the other remote control models on, from, and around. And the construction vehicles help develop motor skills at the same time.

Experience the Thrill of Flying Remote Control Airplanes

Author: Muna wa Wanjiru

To fly in the sky is a dream that many people have. There is a great way that you can experience the thrill of not just flying, but also of piloting a plane. For this all that you need is a remote control model airplane.

With these remote control airplanes you can see the speeds your plane can go. The different planes in the market will allow you to choose the ones that you will enjoy flying the most.

The principle behind remote control airplanes is very simple. You stay on the ground, and your remote sends radio signals to the model airplane. Depending on what you want the airplane to do the signals will convey this information.

You will discover there are various types of remote control airplanes. These will be ones that are futuristic in design, whimsical in nature and also vintage model airplanes.

The vintage style remote control airplanes are ones that are selected the most. These model airplanes are styled on real planes that once flew in the skies. To power these remote control airplanes you will see various types of fuel and engines.

The price of these planes will vary and sometimes the type of airplane that you choose to buy will influence the price. This is not to say that you are creating the price hike, but rather that you have chosen a popular model, or one that is priced at high prices naturally.

The various remote control airplanes will allow you to see the different types of power that are used for these airplanes. You have gas mixture model airplanes, jet airplanes, and others.

For those hobbyists that feel that the building phase of flying their planes is just as important as the flying there are kits of remote control airplanes that you can buy. These kits will reduce the time that is needed to locate, and start the construction of your radio controlled airplane.

Of course besides finding kits, parts that need to be assembled you will find there are a few other types of model airplanes that can be bought.

These types of remote control airplanes are known as Almost Ready to Fly designs, and Ready to Fly designs. With these airplanes the time that is spent on assembling the airplanes is cut down.

For instance you have 10 to 20 hours spent on building a from scratch remote control airplane.

The almost fully built remote control airplanes on the other hand will let you take your airplane to the skies much earlier.

This way you can more quickly be performing loop de loops in the sky.

Remote Control Boats the Entire Family will Enjoy

Author: tim uglow

Are your children and teens spending way too much time "plugged in?" Whether they are addicted to video games, facebook, texting or MTV, you would like to see them getting some fresh air and developing some appreciation for the outdoors?

Choose a different, exciting activity that gets you out of the house and gives you the chance to spend some time together…remote control boats!

There are plenty of good reasons why remote control boats could boost your family's fun factor!

The radio controlled boats are exciting to use (who doesn't like to race?), and it is always easy to find a waterway, pond or lake near you.

That means that unlike remote control airplanes, you don't have to look very far to find a suitable place to play.

And, while you are on your outing, you can also enjoy the chance to fish, picnic, hike or swim.

What a great way to enjoy either a little time with the kids, or an entire day!

You will get a lot of use from your remote control boats because they are durable and they don't have to withstand the high gusts of wind that might cripple a remote control air plane or helicopter.

Not only that, the boats will have an obstacle free area to race or operate in…no trees to smack or power lines to get tangled up with! You don't need to worry about spending a lot of time and money on reapairs and maintenance. More time to get out there and enjoy!

Choose your speed!

If you have teens, pick boats that can reach speeds of up to 60 mph, can be used on larger bodies of water, and will allow for great racing.

If your kids are younger, or you are planning to use the RC boats on smaller bodies of water, slower boats are also available

The RC boats also come in a variety of sizes and colors to help differentiate the boats while racing. You can even get boats that have working lights for night time activity. Add florescent paint to increase night time visability

About the Author

Your contact for remote control boats is Tim Uglow. An avid fisherman, Tim grew up along the shores of Lake Erie. He has also been using remote control boats his entire life. He told me he gained a great respect and appreciation for nature through out the years because he and his dad could enjoy valuable "outdoors time" together. They came up with the idea of tying fishing line and hooks to their remote control boats and setting them out to locate the schools of perch! This worked great because they could follow the perch schools before they upped anchor and moved their fishing boat. The fond memories for days when kids enjoyed the outdoors are one thing that motivated him to open his own boat store.

3 Tips on Choosing Remote Control Boats, Airplanes, Cars and Trucks

Author: Mary Ann Humphrey

Remote control boats, airplanes, cars and trucks are some of the most popular items of interest for hobbyists. In this day and age, RC vehicles are more than just toys. They are actually collectible items and serious enthusiasts spend a significant amount of money buying and accessorizing such playthings.

Over the years, hobby shops from all over the world have experienced a tremendous increase in sales as a result of the growing popularity of radio control vehicles. If you are planning to join other hobbyists in this fun and exciting form of recreation, you first need to learn how to choose the right remote controlled vehicle for you. Here are some important tips.

First off, you need to know the size, or scale, of the remote control boats, airplanes, cars and trucks that you want to focus on. The scale actually represents the size, or proportion of the RC vehicle in relation to real life boat, airplanes, cars, or trucks.

For instance a 1:24 scale model of an RC fighter plane would mean that it is 24 times smaller than the actual plane that it represents. The size or scale of your RC vehicle is important because it can affect fuel consumption, or battery life.

The bigger scale models would naturally consume more fuel or have a shorter battery life than smaller ones.

Next, you need to determine the type of fuel or power source for your remote control boats, airplanes, cars and trucks.

Many RC vehicles use ordinary AA batteries, but these models are usually the ones that are given to kids as toys. Meanwhile, enthusiasts or hobbyists typically go for models that run on rechargeable Ni-Cad batteries. This type of batteries can supply anywhere from 4.8 to 9.6 volts of electrical power. Still, there are NITRO RC vehicles that use petrol much like their real life counterparts. Make sure to check out the box or label to see what type of power source is needed for your RC vehicle.

Finally, remote control boats, airplanes, cars and trucks run on different types of engines. Much like the variable types of fuel or power source, there are also different types of propulsion for each RC model.

There are RC vehicles that are powered by electrical engines, while there are those that use motors that consume petroleum-based fuel. But more and more hobbyists now choose remote control models that are powered by nitro engines.

The type of engine that your RC model uses can directly affect its speed and overall power. For more details, visit www.rcToysandCars.com.

Do you let your girls play with boy toys?

My three year old loves cars and construction toys. She'll play wth barbies and her favorite princess is Cinderella, but if you were to put a barbie and a car side by side she would grab the car. Is it confusing to let a little girl play with boys toys or is it too early for that to be a problem? I think it's fine for her to be interested in cars and fixing things, I was just trying to get some more input from other parents. I always seem to get strange looks when my daughter places her hot wheels on the counter at the store. She loves girl things too, like dresses and makeup. I'm not trying to make her a tomboy.

RC Cars and Trucks – The Favorite Remote Control Hobby

By Mike Brake

Remote control cars and trucks are flying off the shelves. Quickly becoming one of the most popular hobbies, you can find all you need at your local hobby store.

If you are brand new to remote control trucks and cars, here is a quick overview of your options.

First, when you see RTR that means ready to run. In other words, it’s ready to go straight out of the box. This can be a great gift for a newbie hobbyist or just a quick introduction to the hobby itself. The cool thing about RTR models is that they typically allow for upgrades and they have the "kinks" worked out so you are not likely to have to return to the store with issues. Of course, after all the fun you have you will return to the store for more models!

The other, much more time consuming option is to build your own RC from pieces. This can be a much more rewarding experience as you put the RC car or RC truck together yourself. The time building is what makes this type of hobby fun for a lot of fans.

Now onto the type of trucks themselves:

Offroad NITRO remote control Trucks. This might be what you imagine when you think of awesome remote control trucks…the outdoor track, the high jumps, and the fantastic stunts this is it. These are the most durable of RC truck products.

Onroad Nitro Powered RC Cars. These probably go faster than any other related product, but they are also the most fragile. Make sure to only drive these on prepared surfaces like concrete or a soft track.

Nitro Buggies. These combine the power of RC Cars and the durability of the RC Trucks. These are powerful little guys that get the job done!

As mentioned there are all sorts of upgrades you can add to your Remote Control car or Remote Control truck. There are also a ton of options of how to use them.

Depending on their intended use, you might decide to buy both RTR and model kits. For example, if you wanted to build a RC Car or Truck for a competition you probably want to make it from scratch. On the other hand, if you are looking to play around on the street, or have a kid play with them you might decide RTR is more your speed.

Typically it is easier to handle damage if you didn’t build the product yourself. Of course, that’s all relative. Some people just love the building, and don’t really care what happens to the RC Car or Truck after it is assembled.

Any hobby store will have these items. Some stores might have a better selection of models or might specialize in RTR. That’s why it’s so important to shop around. If you find a hobby store that specializes in exactly what you want, chances are the owner has a ton of experience you can use.

If you are brand new to models, RC Cars and Trucks are a very common starting point. Though, they aren’t the only one. Remember, it’s your hobby – do what you want!
